Nagi S. El-Saghir, MD, FACP, FASCO is Professor and Head, Division of Hematology Oncology, Department of Internal Medicine; Director of Breast Center of Excellence, Naef K Basile Cancer Institute, American University of Beirut Medical Center, Beirut, Lebanon.
Dr. Nagi El Saghir graduated from the Free University of Brussels in 1978, trained in New York in Internal Medicine and Hematology-Oncology, and is certified by the American Boards. He is Founding President of the Lebanese Society of Medical Oncology (LSMO, 1997), Past-President of the Lebanese Society of Internal Medicine, Chair of ASCO International Affairs Committee (2013-2014), Co-Chair of ASCO Guidelines Advisory Group of ASCO Clinical Practice Guidelines Committee for Resource-Stratified Guidelines (2014-2017), ASCO Board of Directors Official Nominee (2017), Co-author Breast Health Global Initiative Guidelines, Co-author ESO/ESMO Consensus Guidelines for Advanced Breast Cancer, Co-author ESMO/ASCO Global Curriculum Recommendations, Breast Cancer Core Faculty of ESO and ESMO, member of the Board of Directors of the Arab American Medical Association AMAAC. Prof. El Saghir has over 120 publications in peer-reviewed journals and textbooks, hundreds of abstracts and over 220 post-graduate and CME lectures at International and Regional meetings. His research is focused on breast cancer and young women, BRCA mutations, awareness and early detection, breast cancer management, guidelines and international phase III clinical trials, and multidisciplinary tumor boards. He leads AUBMC Breast Tumor Boards. He is a regular peer reviewer for oncology journals, International Editorial Board of CANCER, Deputy Editor for The Breast (2006-2013), Editorial Board Member of The Breast, ASCO’s Journal of Global Oncology, ASCO Post and International Editor of JCO, and regular contributor to ASCO Connection. Professor El Saghir is Founding President of the Lebanese Breast Cancer Foundation, author of the book “ABC of Breast Diseases”. He is a leader of Cancer Awareness Campaigns and Patient Advocacy, Patient Support Groups, fundraising for support of needy breast cancer patients. His research, teaching, patient care, professional and community activities are recognized to have led to significant regional and international impact, as well as down-staging of breast cancer in Lebanon and improvement of patient outcome for which he has received the Medal of Honor for Achievements in 2002 and the National Cedar Medal of Honor - Rank Officer (2014) from the Presidents of Lebanon, CNRS 2015 Award from the CNRS (Centre National de Recherche Scientifique du Liban), Fellowship of ASCO Award in 2018, LSMO, AMAAC, Lebanese Order of Physicians, Cairo University, League of Woman’s Rights and many others.
